About Us
Cottonwood Creek is located in northern California and is the largest undammed tributary of the Sacramento River in the Northern Central Valley. The Watershed lies within Shasta and Tehama Counties. The town of Cottonwood lies along Interstate 5 halfway between the cities of Red Bluff and Redding. The Cottonwood Creek Watershed encompasses over 603.000 acres and 124 miles of waterway, and is home to several listed species, including salmon and steelhead.
The Cottonwood Creek Watershed Group (CCWG) is an organized group of stakeholders and residents of the Cottonwood Creek Watershed which began operations in 1997. Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 1999, board membership is open to any resident of the watershed. Our current mailing list includes 4,000 addresses.
The watershed, like many areas in rural Northern California, has a long history of farming and ranching, with some families having lived in the watershed since the late 1800s. The CCWG was formed in response to the recognized need for watershed planning in response to growing challenges presented by urbanization and the decline of large-scale agriculture in the area.
Since 1999, the CCWG has provided community education via monthly stakeholder meetings and bimonthly newsletters to all residents in the watershed and other interested parties. In 2007 a Watershed Management plan was adopted, based on an earlier Watershed Assessment completed by CH2MHill, and, more recently, the CCWG has partnered with the Nature Conservancy in developing long-term objectives for restoration efforts.
CCWG takes a holistic approach to watershed management. Working in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, local environmental groups, Resource Conservation Districts, and other federal and state, and local agencies, as well as schools and businesses, the CCWG develops and implements projects which are finely tuned, fiscally efficient, and which meet identified needs for all the inhabitants of the watershed – animals, plants, and people.Projects recently completed or underway include:
· Oak Woodlands Restoration
· Bank Stabilization
· Noxious invasive weed eradication
· Native plant reintroduction
· Riparian Restoration
· School-based environmental education
· Community Gardens (providing produce for low-income residents)
· Establishing a Farmers' Market (about to enter its second year of operations)
· Water-quality assessment
· Wildfire prevention and fuels reduction
