ArtSmart Project
CCWG partnered with the Shasta Arts Council in early 2009. The ArtSmart project is meant to give existing artists in the community a place to show and sell their artwork at the existing Cottonwood Creek Farmers Market and Artisan Fair. The grant also provides money to do art projects with school aged children using recycled or natural materials. The market season runs from May – October each year in downtown Cottonwood.
At the Fall Harvest Festival in October 2009, Indian headbands were made out of suede fabric and a variety of beans and seeds were used by children to decorate the bands of fabric. Over 45 children were able to enjoy the free craft booth that day and supplies ran out quickly. Children wore their headbands proudly running about at the Festival. More projects such as this will continue at future markets.

Several artists used the market as a format to promote the work in 2009. Photographer Andrea Borden attended several markets during the early months of 2009. Other artists included jewelry maker Rhonda Wyatt, graphite pencil artist Kathleen Nolan and potter Linda Holbrook. Numerous sewers, quilters and fiber artists were also featured. The artists’ area will be expanded in market seasons to come thanks to the ArtSmart grant.
