Cottonwood Creek Community Garden
CCWG partnered with Evergreen School District to start a community garden in January 2009. The garden will help feed the low income residents of the watershed and extra produce will go towards the Shepherd’s Heart Food Bank. Funding was obtained from the Tehama County Community Action Agency that has enabled the garden to be developed and built.
The garden is located at the Evergreen Middle School campus, on Learning Way in Cottonwood California. The garden is maintained by CCWG staff, Evergreen School students and teachers and AmeriCorps VISTA’s. CCWG has also recruited various volunteers to help with the busy summer months.
The garden features a variety of raised beds and row crops. Corn, tomatoes, zucchini and potatoes are among the many vegetables currently being grown.
Among feeding the low income, senior citizens and disabled in our community, the garden will serve as an outdoor classroom for adults and school children. Future projects include how-to classes for beginner gardeners, rainwater recycling and pollinator demonstration projects. CCWG is currently working on obtaining funding to purchase a 30x60 greenhouse to further the learning and growing opportunities.
