Shepherd's Heart Food Bank
The Cottonwood Creek Watershed Group has recently partnered with Shepherd’s Heart Food Bank of Cottonwood. The partnership dovetails nicely in with our seasonal Farmers Market, which promotes community involvement, outreach and education in the field of agriculture and environmental issues. It was at the Farmer’s Market that the CCWG staff and volunteers saw the need to feed the impoverished members of our community when we began promoting the WIC (Women Infants Children) Farmers Market Program. The poverty in our community is hidden and desperately needs the attention of those who have the skills and means to provide. CCWG has unique skills and resources for assisting the Shepherd’s Heart Food Bank.
CCWG feels it is appropriate to partner with Shepherd’s Heart Food Bank. There is a clear tie between poverty and environmental degradation, and protecting economic resources is part of the CCWG mission. Ultimately, the watershed is not healthy if the people living within the watershed are not healthy.
Shepherd’s Heart, a part of the Cottonwood First Baptist Church, is all about meeting needs; providing food, support and valuable information to those of the Cottonwood area. With the opening of its doors in 2007, Shepherd's Heart began assisting many of the Cottonwood families who lack the transportation to reach the much larger assistance programs, such as the A.C.C.A Food Bank located in Anderson. Beyond nutritional support, Shepherd’s Heart opened a clothing distribution this last October.
Shepherd's Heart also offers the following educational and skill based courses to the community.
"Financial Planning & Budgeting" -- This class is designed to offer instruction for people who need to understand how to structure their use of money. On all occasions, it is essential for people to know how to "live within their means". This class teaches them how to do that.
"Basics of Food & Nutrition" -- This class is designed to offer instruction for people who need to understand how to determine what foods to eat and what foods to avoid. This class includes the skill of reading packaging labels on food stuffs and count matters such as carbohydrates, proteins and sugars.
"Beyond Survival" -- This class is designed to discover dynamics in life in order to make life much more than simple survival. This class will look at all the dimensions of life: physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual, in order to bring balance to one's existence.
The ultimate goal of Shepherd’s Heart is to find long term solutions rather than just giving a hand out, with no accountability. Community involvement is essential to the success of the Shepherd's Heart. Those wishing to attend classes, volunteer their time or make donations should call Shepherd’s Heart at (530) 347-3691.
